PADF ISSUES URGENT APPEAL FOR SUPPORT AND AID
TO HAITIAN COMMUNITY

April 2008

On Monday, April 7, Haitians took to the streets in protest of the rising cost of food and other essential supplies and products. The demonstrations followed similar protests in the traditionally calm south of Haiti, more specifically Les Cayes’ metropolitan area, as well as other cities around the nation.  The protests lasted several days, and many businesses, public offices, and private homes suffered damages.

The rising cost of living, although felt worldwide, is particularly marked in Haiti where a large percentage of the food and essential products are imported; this is further exacerbated by the global rise in fuel costs.  As the Western hemisphere’s poorest nation, Haiti is particularly affected by these high costs, where the overall price of many basic necessities has more than doubled in the last three months.

PADF has worked in Haiti for over 27 years, and is mobilizing to provide support to the Haitian people in this time of crisis by reducing tensions, creating immediate employment opportunities, and distributing emergency food supplies.

Donations are urgently needed to help PADF respond to this crisis.  More specifically, financial and bulk food donations can be used to leverage other partners’ contributions, and distributed through existing school cafeteria programs and health centers supporting expectant and nursing mothers.

PADF has opened a special Haiti Relief and Recovery Account to receive private and corporate contributions for assistance to the crisis. PADF is a non-profit entity affiliated with the OAS with over 45 years of experience working in development and disaster relief projects in the region.

Contributions to PADF are tax-deductible in the United States.  Contributors are assured that their contributions will go directly to victims’ support and will be managed in a transparent, efficient manner. All contributors will be acknowledged on PADF’s Website.  For more information on how to make corporate donations, please contact PADF at the contact information below.
