PADF Assists Displaced Colombians in Panama
Panama receives relatively fewer displaced persons fleeing drug-related violence in Colombia than Venezuela or Ecuador but has been targeted as a high-priority country because of the increasing activities of illegal groups on both sides of the border. With Fundación Esquel, our implementation partner in Panama, we focus on income generation and training, food security, safe drinking water, transportation of displaced persons to Panama City to obtain legal documents, and emergency and non-emergency shelter. Other initiatives include construction of classrooms to ease crowding of local schools due to the increase in Colombian presence, and the creation of contingency plans for future influxes of displaced persons.
