Responding to Natural Disasters
In May of 2006, President Ronald Venetiaan of Suriname declared the Southeastern part of Suriname a disaster area as a result of unusually heavy rains which flooded 175 traditional community villages and affected over 20,000 people. PADF responded by teaming with the IMF employees’ association to send a $13,500 contribution, paired with a $10,000 from the Organization of American States (OAS) to help those in need. Funding went primarily to reestablishing and improving agricultural production including provision of high-quality seeds, materials and equipment, and training and monitoring of activities.
