Preparing for Natural Disasters
PADF, with its partner organizations the American Chamber of Commerce of Trinidad and Tobago (AMCHAM) and the Association of Contingency Planners (ACP) train prominent companies in preparation for hurricanes and other natural disasters. The initiative focuses on securing business continuity after a disaster occurs. Participants improve their capacity to conduct a business impact assessment, develop emergency preparedness and business continuity plans, and procedures to respond to specific emergencies, among other topics. More than 700 people in 14 communities have benefited from the Alliance’s efforts and we have conducted activities with 22 companies in the country.

On September 29, 2006, two offshore earthquakes shook the entire country. While no major initial damage was reported, a severe crack was found in a two-lane bridge. The Couva/Tabaquite/Talparo Regional Corporation (CTTRC) responded based on training provided by PADF’s Disaster Management Alliance. The bridge was immediately closed and the next day it collapsed. Using the experience gained and equipment donated from the Alliance, including power generators, radios, and other items, the local government immediately secured steel beams from the national Ministry of Works and Transport and began reconstruction efforts. The project was completed very quickly due to expertise gained through the program.
