Earthquake Relief

Following a 7.4-magnitude earthquake on November 7, 2012, that killed 52 people and affected more than 1.2 million residents, Guatemala’s president declared a state of public calamity in seven states, including San Marcos, Retalhuleu, Sololá, Totonicapán, Quetzaltenango, Quiche and Huehuetenango.

PADF worked with Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. and the local government to implement an emergency response to support the most affected communities. This response helped repair and rebuild affected homes in the Department of San Marcos. In addition, the assistance restored vital social infrastructures, including schools, community-run water systems, sanitation and community health facilities, as well as provided social services to children and families.
