Grassroots Community Development

This project offered literacy and reading programs to primary, middle, and high school students, as well as to adults. The primary school reading program was designed to help low-achieving grade 6 children to understand the pleasure of reading books, to develop prediction, self-correction and word attack skills. The middle and high school workshops were designed to equip students with knowledge on how to be effective leaders, teaching and putting to practice leadership principles through role playing, leadership development exercise, and games. The students were taught that good leadership involved serving the group and the people within it, and were encouraged to get involved in community work. Twenty-five students in this small community benefited from the program, as well as 56 adults who participated in the adult literacy initiative. As part of each class self-esteem and positive community contributions were emphasized, as well as creating and sustaining a strong, social supportive family structure.
