They say necessity is the mother of invention, and when you are short on supplies, you've got to get creative. Did you know that you could whip up a delicious and nutritious meal with little more than cornmeal dough, three potatoes, a cup of soy, one carrot, and a bit of olive oil? Even in lean times, nourishment needn't be dull. We're inspired by these recipe cards from our longtime partner, Feed My Starving Children (FMSC). We work with them to deliver fortified rice to families in Latin America and the Caribbean. FMSC's MannaPacks are designed to be simple to make with only boiling water. A single bag of food provides highly nutritious meals for six children.
Earlier this year, PADF partnered with the Fundación Juan Bautista Gutiérrez and Feed My Starving Children to donate 1,260 boxes of fortified rice to Guatemala. This allowed for the preparation of 272,160 meals to help combat malnutrition.
In 2014, PADF's In-Kind Donations program shipped medical equipment, supplies, tools and rice worth more than $10.8 million. These donations reached more than 1.4 million people in Brazil, Colombia, El Salvador and Uruguay.
More than 20 Guatemalan organizations benefitted from this year's rice donation, including:
Instituto Indígena Santiago; Niños de Guatemala; Asociación de Madres de Desamparados; Fundemi Talita-Kumi; Asopuente; Asociación Aloysius; Orfanato Valle de Los Ángeles; Casa del Alfarero; Fundación Javier Alejos; Asociación Nuestros Ahijados de Guatemala; Pennat; Fundación San Martín de Porres; Obra Social de Renace/Hidroeléctrica Santa Teresa; Fundación Vidas Plenas; Fundaniñas; Hope Renewed International; Operación Bendición; Madres Trinitarias; Obras Sociales del Hermano Pedro; Alianza Jóven; Esperanza de Vida; Hogar de Niños; Hortebe; Misioneras Madres de la Caridad, Madre Teresa de Calcuta.
