On January 17, 2024, the Pan American Development Foundation (PADF) launched the initiative “Empowering Circular Systems for a Sustainable Future in Haiti” (Renforcer Les Systemes Circulaires Pour Un Avenir Durable En Haïti) with financial support from The Coca-Cola Foundation. This project aims to strengthen circular systems in Haiti by supporting waste workers and small- and medium-sized enterprises across the recycling value chain. The launch event took place at the Karibe Hotel.

Haiti grapples with pressing waste management issues, where unmanaged plastic waste exacerbates flooding, marine pollution, and health risks. These challenges not only harm social and environmental well-being but also carry economic repercussions. Coastal pollution diminishes fish populations and hinders coastal tourism. Addressing waste management challenges can stimulate economic growth and resilience, not only in waste management but also in sectors like fishing and tourism. The recycling sector presents economic prospects for waste workers and business owners in the sector.

To address waste management challenges and promote economic growth, “Empowering Circular Systems for a Sustainable Future in Haiti” project aims to assist waste workers and small- to medium-sized recycling enterprises with funding and technical support. Recognizing the security challenges faced by established waste management companies headquartered in Port-au-Prince, the project gives priority to recycling companies in Cap Haitian and/or Les Cayes. This prioritization decentralizes the recycling value chain and boosts recycling efforts in northern and southern Haiti. Cleaner coastlines in Cap Haitian and Les Cayes hold significant potential for benefiting the fishing and tourism sectors.

Recognizing the innovative approach of the project, Saadia Madsbjerg, President, The Coca-Cola Foundation, said:

At The Coca-Cola Foundation, we're committed to investing in sustainable, innovative solutions. The multi-faceted program in Haiti, with its blend of technical, financial, and social intervention, is a remarkable model for community uplift and a testament to our aspiration for a greener future."

The project launch included the participation of recycling enterprises, local government, as well as non-profit and international partners. PADF program director, Dr. Lionel Isaac, delivered opening remarks, shedding light on Haiti’s waste management challenges:

We are embarking on a crucial mission to reshape Haiti's approach to waste management. Community involvement goes beyond economics. It's about involving people and encouraging active participation in environmental management. Innovation and community empowerment are at the heart of PADF and the Coca Cola Foundation’s approach."

During the event, the PADF team announced the call for applications for those interested in accessing project funding and technical assistance. Entrepreneurs and business representatives shared insights into their activities and involvement in the recycling value chain.
