PADF Launches Disaster Risk Reduction Project in Paraguay

The Pan American Development Foundation (PADF) is pleased to announce the launch of a new project in Paraguay, Data for Disaster Risk Reduction (D4DRR), with the generous support of the Government of Taiwan. This project aims to strengthen efforts to collect, analyze, disseminate, and monitor data on meteorological, hydrological, and geophysical events. This information will be utilized by local agencies to activate early warning systems during emergencies. With these enhanced systems, we hope to contribute to the reduction of disaster risks and of loss of lives, livelihoods, health, infrastructure, and natural resources.

On July 15, 2022, PADF hosted an event with key partners in Asunción, Paraguay to officially kick off the project. Representatives from various national institutions delivered remarks in support of D4DRR:

  • “We hope to meet global commitments to risk management and disaster reduction through our local actions,” said Minister Gladys Zunilda Borja, of the National Emergency Agency.
  • “This project is important, pertinent, and timely. We will collaborate and contribute to ensure the desired outcomes are achieved,” said Liduvino Vielman, of the Paraguayan Space Agency.
  • “We are ready to contribute and collaborate with all partners in this project to strengthen the understanding of disaster risks,” said Felix Masao Kanasawa Makino, of the Meteorology and Hydrology Administration.
  • “This project will undoubtedly contribute to the reduction of risks and of loss of natural resources. We will be able to improve our joint efforts through this exchange of knowledge and actions,” said Jazmin Tufari, of the National Forestry Institute.
  • “We understand the importance of this project and how it will benefit the most vulnerable communities in Paraguay. We are pleased to support the Government of Paraguay in its efforts to improve the welfare of its people. Taiwan will continue to walk alongside Paraguay and strategic partners such as PADF,” said the Honorable José Chih-Cheng Han, Taiwan’s Ambassador to Paraguay.
  • “Through our partnership with Taiwan, we have strengthened the capacity of people to reduce risks in their communities that disrupt lives and impact economic opportunities. These disasters have become a constant challenge for governments and societies,” said Dr. Elizabeth Fox, PADF Chief Program Officer.

PADF and Taiwan have been partners since 2012, reaching more than 350,000 people in 10 countries to date. The goal of our strategic partnership is to reduce risks and strengthen disaster resilience among communities across Latin America and the Caribbean.
